Return to Sender

Somewhere along the way, this writing group had turned into more than just a bunch of people who liked to write. Not too long ago, it had been just another library program—locals looking for something to do, most of us unfamiliar with each other. But through the stories, the sharing of life moments, we started to bond. We shared jokes, heartaches, and decades of memories.

That day was the last workshop before Christmas, and we met at a coffee shop called The Shake & Grind, a name that never failed to crack everyone up. “Whoever named this joint,” Sybilla said, chuckling, “was definitely having fun picturing us seniors saying it out loud.” Chairs scraped as people pulled them out to gather their belongings, holiday wishes flying around the table. I stood at the end of the table with a stack of small gifts wrapped in last year’s discarded wrapping paper. “Hey, before you all take off, I got something for ya,” I said, handing them out. “Don’t get too excited—I’m on a budget.” That’s when the bell over the door jingled, and in walked the postman.
